Provides decent, safe and affordable housing to low-income families of Southeastern Tennessee. The program provides Housing Choice Vouchers that allow the family to locate a unit of their choice that meets Housing Quality Standards rather than in a public housing development. The monthly subsidy amount is a portion of the rent, based on the family's income, and is paid directly to the landlord.

Eligibility Less than 50% of median income. Bring proof of income, family size/composition, assets, picture ID, at the time of application.
Intake Process Contact any county office for information on any of these services. Must make application at the HCVP Office.

Tips Before Applying for Low Income Housing
  • 1. Research all of the different low-income housing programs available in your area. There are a variety of federal, state, and local programs that offer low-income housing assistance.   • 4. Waiting Lists: The waiting lists for most, if not all low-income housing programs is long. Do not limit yourself to only apply to one apartment location.

Qualifications: Do you qualify to live here?
To qualify for low income housing in Tennessee, you must meet the following income requirements:

Your household income must be below 80% of the area median income (AMI). The AMI is updated annually by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and varies by county.

You must have a valid Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal immigrant.

In addition to the income requirements, you may also need to meet other eligibility requirements, such as:

- You must not have been evicted from any public housing or Section 8 housing in the past three years.
- You must not have any outstanding felony convictions for drug-related offenses.
- You must not be a registered sex offender.
